Herbs Lending a Helping Hand |
|
Knowing how to use herbs for medicinal purposes I get very excited seeing them at the nursery but have not been overly keen on growing some of them because I'd need a huge harvest to be able to utilise them for their health benefits and some can be quite invasive. But now there are no excuses!
I'll admit I'm not a great gardener, but I love gardening and I'm only relatively new to it (my husband is a landscaper by trade and he's always done most of the outside stuff and we havn't had a lot of space until now) so now I can only give it a go and get better, right?
I've always had some culinary herbs in pots and have recently been getting more and more into the vegie garden and doing a lot of reading. I've found out about some tried and tested organic gardening techniques to make my journey to having a satistying and sustainable backyard a little smoother! I find so many inspiring ideas in the huge range of magazines, seriously, I did not know there were so many out there until recently and now I find it hard to walk out of the newsagent with less than five mags! So with this article I'm being on of 'those' people who are writing from an academic point of view rather than from one of experience when it comes to gardening, with the following information being a collaboration of several resources because I'm excited about this information I love sharing what I learn, especially if it means you go out and get some more herbs in your garden too.

Sunscreens - friend or foe? - Nicole Bijlsma |
|
This article was published in July 2010 but that was the middle of winter!! It's obviously a topic that is far more relevant at this time of year. Thanks to Nicole Bijlsma (The Healthy Home Guru) for this great information on sunscreens, please always remember (like anything you purchase) you can't assume that just because it's readily available on the shelf of a supermarket or pharmacy that it's safe for your family!
Despite the fact that more people use sunscreen than ever before, the rate of skin cancer continues to rise. Research conducted by the Environmental Working Group in 2011, revealed that the great majority of sunscreens do not protect against both UVA and UVB rays and in addition, may contain chemicals that affect our hormones, damage the skin and in some cases, actually increase the rate of skin cancer.

The girls are here! in Part 2 |

The chickens should come first not the blog! But when I get excited (or angry, frustrated, happy, sad) about something, as well as telling everyone about it, I write about it! So finally, after much reading, day dreaming, longing, and more reading, I’ve chosen my chicken coop! (yes I bet you thought I was going to say something much more interesting than that didn’t you!) And I found ONE place that sells the coop, hay, feed, waterer and feeder (perhaps not exactly what they are called?), but most importantly….THE CHICKENS too!.......

January 2012 - New Years Revolution...or something like that!! |
|
As we bid a farewell to the year that has passed it seems inevitable that things that we want to change or like to go back and redo start creeping into our minds. Things we should of said or didn’t say. Actions we took or didn’t take. There becomes this moment when the calendar is ending and we start pulling down the Christmas decorations that we start judging and analyzing patterns and behavior that didn’t give us the outcomes and answers that we wanted or what we think we needed over the course of the year.....

Promoting and practising positivity |
|
Thanks to Carole from Easier Parenting for this insightful parenting article. We all WANT to promote emotional health and wellbeing in our children, but in the hectic day to day struggles it can sometimes be a little difficult. Carole offers excellent practical advice to help us understand our kids and our own behaviours a little better......
Children that are handled in positive, respectful ways are likely to want to behave well, and will more likely become good, well-adjusted citizens. It is preferable for parents to become very familiar with their own style of relating, verbally and non-verbally, and to improve their own skills of positivity......
